The State of Maranhão Pilots's Association (APEM) today has 32 pilots.

APEM has its headquarter located in modern and well-equipped facilities in the district of Calhau, where the sentry point is also located and furnished with a team of qualified and experienced bilingual staff who monitor the traffic of ships in the Bay of São Marcos 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ZP-4 is divided into two sections. The first is contained between the access to the cleared channel, near buoy no. 1 and in the vicinity of buoy no. 19. In this section, the pilotage service is available to seafarers as an optional choice, and should be requested in advance. The second section is located between the vicinity of buoy no. 19 and the port terminals, where the pilotage service is mandatory.

To fulfil its mission, APEM has nine small pilot boats and three mooring boats, manned by qualified seafarers trained by the Harbourmaster.
