Pilotage is an activity based on the knowledge of accidents and the key features of the area in which they occur. The activity is conducted in stretches of coast, bays, harbours, river estuaries, lakes, rivers, terminals and channels where there is shipping traffic. The main reason for this service is providing greater efficiency and safety to navigation, ensuring the safeguard of human life at sea and preserving the environment.

Pilots are the professionals who carry out this activity. They have extensive experience and technical expertise in navigation and ship manoeuvring, as well as local knowledge.

This role is conducted on board the vessels where the pilots are led to using speedboats, with specific standards for the safe transport of the pilot.
